Wood flooring manufacturers use a similar but slightly different industrial grade poly. the best finishes, imo, and i do custom stocks for people from time to time, are finishes that will not stand proud of the wood surface. finishes like that fail only after the wood itself has failed. they don't chip, crack, or dent unless the wood itself does.. It won't tolerate abuse like flooring finishes, but it is much easier to maintain, and looks better. it will add a reddish amber hue to the wood, but in darker or browner wood like that it brings out the colors. white woods will yellow with it. personally i find polyurethane to be a wonderful finish, but not hard enough for a heavy use dining. wood finishes reddit
